Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip fell in love when Elizabeth was just 13 years old and began exchanging letters. Years later the couple announced that they were getting engaged in 1947. At the time of their engagement, Philip and Elizabeth were 21 and 26, respectively.
A few months into courtship, the couple decided to get married at Westminster Abbey. However, they did not end their wedding ceremony with a kiss. Even after their marriage, the couple never showed any public display of affection and used to stand side by side. In this rare photo, Prince Philip was seen planting a kiss on the monarch’s cheek on New Year’s Eve in 1999.
